Janmaasthami is a Hindu festival popularly known in Mumbai as Dahi Handi. It is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna. This year the festival was held on 14th of August.
What is a Handi?
A handi is a clay pot filled with buttermilk.
What is the significance of this tradition?
The 'Gopis' (cow-herd girls) used to hang this clay pot filled with buttermilk on an adequate height so that Krishna-Baby could not steal butter from them.
How is the Dahi Handi celebrated?
Various 'Handis' are set up locally in several parts of the city. A human pyramid made by a group of youngsters called Govinda travel around in trucks trying to break as many 'Handis' as possible during this day.

The Dahi Handi is a personification of Lord Krishna's efforts to steal butter from Matka (clay pot) suspended from the ceiling.
